Women outnumbered men in the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana when it came to taking part in skill-building programs, with almost 95% of them selecting tailoring as their chosen trade.
Since its introduction on September 17, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative has trained 350,000 people. Out of them, 110,000 (31.3%) are men and 240,000 (68.76%) are women. A research states that 230,000 of the female participants became skilled tailors, and 33,104 of the male participants selected masonry instruction. The targeted objective of 3 million people has not been reached, with 1.04 million people registering for training under the program, according to government statistics.

Karnataka (83,067), Gujarat (56,221), Jammu and Kashmir (55,856), Andhra Pradesh (44,922), Assam (24,851), Maharashtra (17,557), Uttar Pradesh (13,026), Madhya Pradesh (10,692), Rajasthan (7,846), and Chhattisgarh (7,830) are the states that receive the greatest benefits from the program, according to the report.

In eight states, including West Bengal, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu, where there has only been one registration apiece and no training has started, the program has not yet gained traction.
According to the sources, a senior government official stated that in order to maximize the program’s benefits for the populace, efforts are being made to persuade these states and Union Territories (UTs) to execute it as soon as possible.

“Some of these states and UTs have not even on-boarded village panchayats for identification of beneficiaries. Unless that happens, training cannot start,” the official said.

Traditional artists and craftspeople working in eighteen traditional trades are included in the program. Beneficiaries can choose to participate in advanced training for up to 15 days after completing five to seven days of basic training. The program’s goal is to develop the recipients’ abilities and talents in order to enable them to launch their own companies or find jobs in the trades of their choice. During the training time, each beneficiary is provided with an ID card and Vishwakarma certificate in addition to a daily stipend of Rs 500. According to the article, these documents are provided to candidates as proof of their skill sets when they apply for jobs.
