The Passion Within: Redefining Gynaecological Care
As she rose to unprecedented heights in gynaecology, Dr. Rooma encountered numerous challenges effectively. There were two major turning points in her career. As she recalls, initially, the challenges were plenty when she had just begun. The first was in the late 90s when she started her practice in Hyderabad. That is the time when people were trying to think about moving from open surgery to keyhole surgeries or laparoscopic surgery, she shares. “I was just at the beginning of my practice, and very few gynaecologists, in fact, female gynaecologists, took it up. Mostly, it was the men who were doing it. But I took that challenge in 1996 and I trained myself as there were hardly any trainers or mentors at that time,” reveals Dr. Rooma. Dr Kurien Joseph from Chennai was her first mentor in minimal access surgery.
She persevered and reached where she is today using a Japanese philosophy called ‘Ganbarimasu or Do your best.’ Dr. Rooma said, “You just put your head down and keep doing things. That was my first turning point in surgery in gynaecology. And you know when you start doing, eventually you get better by doing your best. I was treating everybody. I was teaching. I was learning. I was attending conferences, publishing papers, and at the same time was managing my personal life.”
A Guiding Hand and a Steady Scalpel
Then, in 2012, the second turning point of her surgical career came. Dr. Rooma witnessed another groundbreaking technology – Robotic surgery. She said, “I had the same feeling I had in ’96. This is a new technology. I have to learn it all over again. Because this is what will help people, help women, and is the future.”
Again, from 2012, Dr. Rooma learned everything about Robotic surgery independently because there were hardly any teachers or mentors. She attended conferences and interacted with peers and colleagues. However, she gives credit to Dr Meenakshi Jain from Florida, USA to give her the first introduction and encouragement to use Robotics for surgery.
Today, she is one of the most renowned robotic surgeons and a mighty mentor for younger surgeons who want to pursue it. “Having done this today, for the last one or two years, I’m now venturing into associating robotic surgery with artificial intelligence, 3D printing and virtual reality. These things will come up in my career if you talk to me four or five years later,” says Dr. Rooma. It is the third turning point, at the forefront of which she stands.
There were two parallels to her story. The first was her meteoric rise in the male-dominated field of Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery, especially robotic surgery. The second was the mighty balancing act of work-life equilibrium. However, taking the challenge as an opportunity, Dr Rooma honed her organizational and leadership skills.

Vision for a Healthier Future
Elaborating on advanced technologies and how they transform healthcare, Dr. Rooma says that today, before performing any surgery in reality, practitioners must learn in a simulated environment, as simulations are available for every surgery.
Dr. Rooma explains, “No pilot will fly a plane without processing the simulation. That concept comes in any surgical field because the patient’s life is paramount. You can’t just let anybody go and do any surgery. Many of these, like VR applications, artificial intelligence, and simulations, have come into surgical education. I’m getting into it so we can better teach the younger surgeons. That is one point. The second thing we can use is to diagnose and pre-plan the surgery. Suppose I have a very complex surgery; I can do a virtual reality surgery of that patient before I even enter the OT so that I know what steps I have to take, what I have to protect, what I have to remove, and all those things. These are some of the fields that are coming. Many more are coming up, though not in general clinical practice at present. However, it is the immediate future.”
