The increasing prevalence of lifestyle disorders among women, as well as the lack of exercise centers for women in the hamlet, prompted the idea of establishing a women-only fitness centre.
A grama panchayat in Kerala’s Kottayam district has established a women-only exercise centre, setting a new standard for women’s ’empowerment’.
The Aymanam grama panchayat is now in the midst of opening two more ‘Vanitha fitness centres’, having been impressed by the response to the project, including from ladies over the age of 60.
The increasing prevalence of lifestyle disorders among women, as well as the lack of exercise centers for women in the hamlet, prompted the idea of establishing a women-only fitness centre. Aside from five types of sophisticated workout equipment, the center also provides yoga training. A professional trainer is also available. So far, 43 women from the neighbourhood have joined the centre, which began operations a month ago. The group consisted of four ladies over the age of 60, as well as many working women, homemakers, and students.
It works for around two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. Anitha, 53, one of the members, believes that participating in the fitness center has made a significant difference in their general health. “Many of us who could not sit on the floor till recently are now even doing Surya Namaskar,” she told reporters.
Aymanam panchayat president Viji Rajesh and ward member Biju Manthattil stated that, despite the fact that the fitness club was established with panchayat funding for women’s development, members are charged a monthly fee of Rs. 200 to cover the trainer’s cost and other incidental charges. Work on opening two more women-only exercise centers is underway, they said.
