Judge Fathima Beevi, the first female Supreme Court judge in India, passes away at the age of 96

At the age of ninety-six, Justice Fathima Beevi, the first female judge of the Indian Supreme Court, passed away on Thursday. She was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu after her tenure in the Supreme Court.

Kerala’s Health Minister Veena George expressed her condolences for Justice Beevi’s passing, stating that it was a very painful death.

The minister said that Justice Beevi made history as the first female governor of Tamil Nadu and judge of the Supreme Court.

“She was a courageous lady with a long list of accomplishments. In a statement, George said, “She was a personality who through her own life showed that willpower and a sense of purpose can overcome any adversity.”

The sources state that on November 14, 1950, Justice Fathima Beevi enrolled as an advocate after earning her bachelor’s degree in law from the Government Law College.

Her career began in the lower judiciary of Kerala in 1950, and she quickly rose through the ranks to hold posts as the District and Session Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Subordinate Judge, Munsiff in the Kerala Subordinate Judicial Services, and Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.

Justice Beevi was appointed a Supreme Court judge in 1989 after serving as a High Court judge there in 1983.

In addition, she was the first Muslim judge appointed to a higher judiciary position.

Judge Beevi was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu after serving as a member of the National Human Rights Commission following her retirement.

While Justice Beevi was the state’s governor, she also held the position of Chancellor of Tamil Nadu University. She was honoured with both the Bharat Jyoti Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the US-India Business Council (USIBC).
