Indian boxer Jasmine Lamboria won all three of her rounds against Camara to support the selectors’ choice to field her in the 57kg weight class rather than her usual 60kg weight class, where she was a reserve for the event, has reserved her spot for the Olympics in Paris.
India’s fifth and sixth Paris Olympics quotas were secured by 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalists Amit Panghal (51 kg) and Jasmine (women’s 57 kg) after they prevailed in their quarterfinal matches at the Boxing World Qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday.
In the 51kg quarterfinals, Panghal overcame a sluggish start and won by unanimous decision with a mix of uppercuts and jabs against China’s Liu Chuang. Jasmine, who lost in the 57kg division, had the opportunity to take part in boxing. Parveen Hooda, who defeated Mali’s Marine Camara on the same scoreline, had to forfeit the quota that she had gained for the Federation of India. Ten boxers from India, seven of them male and three female, were dispatched to Bangkok. On Friday, Nishant Dev defeated Vasil Sebotari of Moldova in the quarterfinals to become the first male boxer from India to qualify in the 71kg class.
With a strong showing of determination and aggression against Chuang on Sunday, Panghal was added to that list. Chuang won the first round 4:1 because of some well-placed back punches. However, the Indian national champion surprised all five judges by coming out swinging in Round 2 and going on a relentless attack to take the lead. In the final round, both fighters used fast-paced boxing techniques to try to defeat one another.
