In an unprecedented feat, Indian women officers have embarked on a trans-oceanic voyage from INS Mandovi, Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius aboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini, marking a historic moment. This expedition, conducted under the Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA), showcases the strength and prowess of Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A as they navigate the seas in double-handed mode, demonstrating the Indian Navy’s commitment to gender equality in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The officers have undergone rigorous training and preparation over the past two and a half years, including previous voyages from Goa to Mauritius and back in 2022, and from Goa to Rio De Janeiro via Cape Town and back in the preceding year. They also undertook a voyage from Goa to Port Blair and back in double-handed mode. This expedition serves as their final practice before their upcoming circumnavigation scheduled for September.
Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), a distinguished yachtsman who has circumnavigated the globe twice, flagged off the expedition after mentoring the officers for six months. He expressed pride in launching this significant journey, emphasizing its representation of the adventurous spirit and resilience of the Indian Navy. He conveyed full confidence in the officers’ abilities, wishing them fair weather and safe travels.
