It stated that Section 5 of the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976 makes it plain that no discrimination shall be made while recruiting men and women personnel. The Ministry of Labour and Employment stated Wednesday that it has requested a thorough report from the Tamil Nadu labour department on media claims stating married women are not permitted to work at the Foxconn India Apple iPhone Plant.
“The labour and employment ministry takes note of media reports on married women not being allowed to work at Foxconn India Apple iPhone Plant,” it stated in a statement.
It emphasized that Section 5 of the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976 clearly states that no discrimination shall be made while recruiting men and women personnel. The state government has been asked to submit a report because it is the appropriate authority for implementing and administering the provisions of this Act, according to the statement. The ministry also announced that the Regional Chief Labour Commissioner’s office has been asked to submit the report to the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment.
“The Regional Chief Labour Commissioner’s office has also been directed to furnish the factual report to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India,” according to a Labor Ministry statement.
Section 5 of the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976 explicitly states that no discrimination should be made while recruiting men and women. The State Government is the proper authority for enforcing and administering the requirements of this Act, hence the report has been requested from them.
Similarly, the Regional Chief Labour Commissioner’s office has been asked to provide the Ministry with a factual report, according to the statement. According to media reports, Foxconn India, a main maker of Apple devices, has systematically rejected married women from job chances at its iPhone assembly factory in Sriperumbudur.
