The Lone Hi-Tech Warrior
As a leader in India’s AI sector, Kamaljeet has faced her share of obstacles. Yet, she says facing numerous challenges is a familiar experience for her. “Often, I find myself as the lone woman in a room full of men, navigating situations where my voice may be dismissed, under mined or not taken seriously in discussions involving ‘hi-tech’ subjects despite having 25 years of experience, an engineering degree and double masters under my belt and various other credentials. I have been through the struggle of being bottled and branded in ways I didn’t agree with, and it took lot of courage for me to break those barriers and fight various odds of biases. I want to be role model for my son as a single parent to make him a better person who will respect women and treat them fairly.”
These encounters underscore the prevalence of gender bias and stereotypes, which have been persistent obstacles throughout her journey as an Indian woman aspiring for leadership roles. Systemic biases and a lack of mentorship opportunities have posed additional barriers, while traditional gender norms discourage women from pursuing careers in high-tech fields. Addressing these issues at the root, particularly within educational institutions where gender imbalances are stark, is crucial.
Despite these challenges, Kamaljeet says that she is grateful for the unwavering support of her open-minded and liberal parents, who instilled in her the value of being resilient and never doubt that you deserve a seat at the table, regardless of the field she chose. “I’ve been fortunate to have encountered supportive parents and mentors who played pivotal roles in shaping my aspirations and career trajectory. Their guidance has been invaluable, reinforcing my belief in the importance of women’s leadership.”
In her pursuit of championing women’s leadership, she actively engages with forums like WLDA (Women Leaders in Data and AI). “Through WLDA, I connect with inspiring women leaders and contribute to fostering greater participation of women in the evolving landscape of AI.” These endeavours reflect Kamaljeet’s commitment to empowering women and creating inclusive spaces where their voices are heard and valued.
