The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation’s Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) indicates that the country’s female labor force participation rate has risen recently.
According to official data, women’s participation in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) reached a record high of 59.25% to December 24 of the current financial year 2023–24, making it the highest in ten financial years.
Women’s involvement rates in the MGNREGS, which are expressed as women person-days as a proportion of the total, were 54.82% in 2021–2022 and 57.47% in 2022–2023. At the time of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020–21, it was 53.19%; in the pre–Covid era, it was 54.78% in 2019–20.
According to data on the NREGS webpage, women made up 141.37 crore, or 59.25%, of the 238.62 crore person-days under the NREGS from 2023–24 to December 24.
In 2022–2023 there were 169.90 crore (57.47 %) more woman-person-days than there were total (295.66 crore). 2020–21 saw the lowest level of female involvement in the NREGS over the previous ten fiscal years, at 53.19%.
The NREGS estimates for women’s involvement for 2023–24 are based on data that was available as of December 24. At the end of the fiscal year, in March 2024, there may be a slight adjustment. Broad trends, however, show that women’s participation in the rural job guarantee program is steadily increasing.
The women’s involvement rate has been above 70% in the southern states of Tamil Nadu (86%), Kerala (89%), Puducherry (87.16%), and Goa (72%). However, over time, it has been at or below 40% in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh (42.50%), Maharashtra (43.76%), Lakshadweep (38.24%), and Uttar Pradesh (42.39%).
However, three of them—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Lakshadweep—have seen an increase this fiscal year.
For example, it was 37.87% in 2022–2023 and 42.39% in 2023–2024. In a same vein, Madhya Pradesh saw a rise from 41.80% to 42.50% and Lakshadweep from 26.67% to 38.24%. A total of 5.38 crore families used NREGS through December 24, 2023, during the fiscal year 2023–24; this compares to 6.18 crore in 2022–23 and 7.25 crore in 2021–22.
The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation’s Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) indicates that the country’s female labor force participation rate has risen recently.
In rural regions, the surge was substantial. The percentage of women in the labor force among all people in a given population is known as the female labor force participation rate (LFPR), and it rose from 18.2% in 2017–18 to 30.5% in 2022–2023 (July–June) in rural areas. The percentage of unemployed women has decreased, from 3.8% in 2017–18 to 1.8% in 2022–2023.
