The Savitribai Phule Women’s Hostel on Charni Road in Mumbai will undergo structural renovations with funding from the state government totalling more than Rs 89 crore. The new building, which will be constructed on the same site, will have eight stories in addition to a ground floor and improved firefighting and handicapped-accessible infrastructure.
For more than a year, the hostel’s residents in South Mumbai have been complaining about the hostel’s terrible structural conditions. However, there was no break. Following the death of a resident student in June of this year, the government’s department of higher and technical education conducted a thorough investigation of this hostel as well as 110 other hostels located around Maharashtra.
As a result, when Savitribai Phule Women’s Hostel was being repaired and renovated, over 450 prisoners from this hostel were moved to a makeshift location in Bandra. The Department of Higher and Technical Education released a Government Resolution (GR) on Wednesday authorizing Rs 89,51,35,000 in funding for the project.
The former building housed around 450 women and had four stories in addition to the ground. According to a department official, the new structure will have a capacity of close to 1,000 residents and be outfitted with all safety features advised by a five-member committee that Director of Higher Education Shailendra Deolankar formed to conduct a security audit of all hostels.
One of the committee’s recommended infrastructure improvements is erecting a sturdy safety wall surrounding each hostel.
